Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get fit tested with a beard?
For safety and compliance reasons, individuals MUST be clean-shaven where the mask seals to the face in order to complete a valid N95 fit test.
This is based on health and safety regulations from the CSA, Health Canada, and Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, and not the preference of the testing provider.
Facial hair, such as beards or stubble, can prevent the mask from achieving a proper seal, making the test invalid.

What if I 'fail' the fit test
'Failing' the test just means the mask you have on is not the correct fit. This is why we do testing! There is no one-size-fits-all.
If the first mask does not pass testing, we have alternative sizes and will try another size during your session. And no, there is no additional cost to you if the 1st mask doesn't fit.
Is there a certificate or proof of testing?
Each client will receive a physical business-card sized certificate of testing upon successful completion of the session.

Information on the certificate includes client name, date of testing, name of fit tester and the mask model and size successfully fitted.

This certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of testing. (note: some school and/or employers may require annual testing).
Do you test KN95 masks or just N95's?
We specialize in testing N95 masks, which are the regulatory standard for most healthcare settings in Ontario.
KN95 masks can be tested; however, they are not always accepted in regulated environments.
Please check with your governing body to confirm eligibility.
How often do I need to be re-tested?
Fit testing should be repeated at least every two years, or sooner if the individual changes mask brands or models, experiences significant weight change, facial surgery, or any other factor that could affect fit
What regulations require this testing?
N95 fit testing is a requirement under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, and is supported by the Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA), Ministry of Labour, and regulatory colleges such as RCDSO and CPSO.
What happens if there’s a question or issue during testing?
We are prepared to troubleshoot and provide guidance in real time. If a mask fails to fit, we’ll work with the individual to recommend suitable alternatives and provide a retest if needed.
How do I prepare for my N95 mask fit testing session?
-
Every client must be clean-shaven where the mask seals to the face. See our acceptable guidelines for facial hair.
-
No eating, drinking (except water), smoking or chewing gum 15 minutes before the test. Why? We use Bitrex and/or Saccharine to perform testing which is taste-based solution, and the above can blunt the taste. Learn more about the qualitative fit testing process.
