Don't forget to keep yourself safe, PSW's

Updated: 13 hours ago

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) play a vital role in Ontario’s healthcare system, providing essential care to vulnerable populations every day. Their work often puts them in close contact with individuals who may carry infectious diseases. Wearing an N95 mask is one of the most effective ways to protect themselves and those they care for. This post explains why PSWs should wear N95 masks and highlights the importance of regular fit testing to reduce health risks.

Why PSWs Need to Wear N95 Masks

N95 masks filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria. Unlike regular surgical masks, N95 respirators provide a tighter seal around the face, reducing the chance of inhaling harmful particles. PSWs often work in environments where airborne diseases like COVID-19, influenza, and tuberculosis can spread easily. Wearing an N95 mask helps:

  • Protect against airborne infections when caring for patients with respiratory illnesses.

  • Reduce transmission risk to family members and other clients.

  • Maintain workplace safety by following public health guidelines.

In Ontario, PSWs have faced significant exposure risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Ontario’s Ministry of Health, healthcare workers accounted for a substantial portion of COVID-19 cases in the early waves, with many infections linked to inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). This data underscores the need for proper mask use.

The Importance of Regular Fit Testing

An N95 mask only works well if it fits correctly. Fit testing ensures the mask forms a tight seal on the wearer’s face, preventing air leaks that reduce protection. There are two types of fit testing:

  • Qualitative fit testing uses a test agent with a distinct taste or smell to detect leaks.

  • Quantitative fit testing uses a machine to measure the amount of leakage.

Ontario’s health and safety regulations require employers to provide fit testing for workers who use respirators. For PSWs, regular fit testing is critical because:

  • Facial features can change over time due to weight changes or aging, affecting mask fit.

  • Different mask models fit differently, so testing ensures the right mask is chosen.

  • Proper fit reduces the risk of infection, protecting both PSWs and clients.

Fit testing should happen at least every two years, whenever a different mask model is used and if there are significant weight changes. Skipping fit testing can leave everyone vulnerable to airborne hazards.

Practical Tips for PSWs Using N95 Masks

To maximize protection, PSWs should follow these best practices:

  • Perform a seal check every time you put on the mask. Cover the mask with both hands and exhale sharply. If air leaks around the edges, adjust the mask until a tight seal is achieved.

  • Avoid touching the mask while wearing it. If you must adjust it, clean your hands before and after.

  • Ensure masks are changed regularly and disposed of immediately if wet or soiled.

  • Report any fit or supply issues to your supervisor immediately.

Ontario Statistics on PSW Safety and Mask Use

Data from Ontario’s healthcare sector shows that PSWs are among the frontline workers most affected by respiratory illnesses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PSWs accounted for a significant number of workplace outbreaks in long-term care homes. The Ontario Ministry of Labour reported that many outbreaks were linked to improper PPE use or lack of fit testing.

A survey conducted by the Ontario Personal Support Workers Association found that over 70% of PSWs felt more confident in their safety when provided with N95 masks and regular fit testing. This confidence translates into better care for clients and fewer sick days among staff.

Supporting Your Safety as a PSW

Your safety matters. Wearing an N95 mask and ensuring it fits properly protects you and those you care for. If your workplace does not provide regular fit testing or adequate masks, speak up. Advocate for your right to safe working conditions.

Remember, safety is a shared responsibility. By following mask guidelines and fit testing protocols we can reduce the risk of infection and continue delivering compassionate care with confidence.
